HEAL, PREVENT, PERFORM.

You've Stretched It. You've Strengthened It. You've Rested It.It Still Hurts. Here's Why.

Trainer Mike Fleming — MS, ATC, CSCS, USAW, NASE, PES — has spent years working with athletes and physically active people. The pattern he sees consistently: people doing the right exercises in the wrong order, and wondering why nothing changes. His system is built around fixing that. This is where it starts.

Sound Familiar?

You're not out of shape. You're not lazy. You put in the work.

But something keeps getting in the way.

Maybe it's the lower back that flares up every time you try to lift heavy. The hip that locks up on a run. The shoulder tension you've been carrying so long you've started treating it like a permanent fixture instead of a problem to solve.

You've tried the things you were supposed to try:

  • The stretches your physical therapist gave you — helped for a week, then stopped
  • Strengthening programs you found online — made it worse, or made nothing happen
  • Rest — fine until you move again
  • Foam rolling, massage, heat, ice — temporary relief, same old problem waiting on the other side

Here's what those programs didn't tell you: the exercises weren't wrong. The order was.

Your nervous system activates muscles in a specific sequence. When that sequence is disrupted — by injury, compensation patterns, or a program that skips foundational steps — the wrong muscles end up doing jobs they weren't designed for. The result is exactly what you've been experiencing: pain, stiffness, the chronic feeling that your body is working against you instead of for you.

This is not a strength problem. It is not a flexibility problem. It is a sequencing problem.

And it has a specific, teachable solution.

The mechanism

Why Traditional Programs Fall Short — And What Actually Works

Most rehabilitation programs and generic gym routines focus on what to do.

Mike Fleming's system is built around when — the order those exercises are performed, and why that order determines whether the exercises actually work.

Your nervous system has a startup sequence. Deep stabilizing muscles — the ones that sit closest to your joints and govern your body's foundational control — have to activate before the larger, more powerful muscles can do their job efficiently. When that sequence is bypassed, your body recruits whatever is available instead. Bigger muscles take on jobs they weren't designed for. Joints absorb load that should be distributed across the whole system. Movement patterns that should feel effortless start to feel like effort.

The result is what Trainer Mike calls compensation — and the longer compensation patterns go uncorrected, the more the body reinforces them. You don't just feel pain in that moment. You train your body to keep producing it.

The fix is not more stretching. It is not harder training. It is training in an order that respects how your body was designed to move.

That is the entire premise of the 4B Training Process.

“Your Body Can Change — Immediately.”

When given the right stimulus in the right order, the nervous system responds fast. Proper muscle activation produces immediate improvement in strength, resilience, and mobility — not eventually, but in your first session.

The system

The 4B Training Process

Built from the ground up. Four phases, in order.

Fleming Athletics 4B tree — BASE roots, BODY trunk, BRANCHES limbs, BUILD canopy
  1. BUILD

Strength & Performance12-week plan, strength, power

    Weeks 4–15
  2. BRANCHES

    Speed & Precisionshoulders, neck, grip

    Week 3
  3. BODY

    Power & Forcethighs, trunk, rotation

    Week 2
  4. BASE

Foundation & Breathingdiaphragm, deep hip flexors, glutes

    Weeks 0–1
  1. 01Weeks 0–1

    BASEFoundation & Breathing

Breathing. Core Stability. Hip & Glute Activation.

Everything starts here. Not with a squat. Not with a plank. With how you breathe.

Diaphragmatic breathing is not a warm-up technique — it is the mechanism that stabilizes your core from the inside out. Combined with deliberate activation of the deep hip flexors and glutes, BASE training teaches your body the neurological foundation it needs for every movement that follows.

Most programs assume this foundation is in place. It isn't — not for most physically active adults dealing with pain. BASE is where that gets corrected.

  2. 02Week 2

    BODYPower & Force

    Trunk Strength. Rotation. Force Production.

Once the foundation is set, we build power.

BODY layers in thigh and trunk strength to absorb and produce force across the full kinetic chain — the force output the glutes and hips activated in BASE are now able to transmit. It develops rotational capacity and restores the balance between squat-pattern strength and hamstring strength that protects joints long-term.

This is where the body starts to feel like it is working for you.

  3. 03Week 3

    BRANCHESSpeed & Precision

    Shoulders. Arms. Grip. Feet. Control.

    Now the signal gets refined.

BRANCHES frees the shoulders, arms, and neck for smooth, pain-free movement. It addresses grip and elbow function to reduce the chronic tension that travels up the chain. It teaches load-appropriate mechanics for walking, running, and jumping — so those activities stop creating stress on the feet and shins.

For athletes, this is often the phase that produces the most immediately noticeable performance improvement.

  4. 04Weeks 4–15

    BUILDStrength & Performance

12 Weeks. Personalized. Progressive. Delivered in Everfit.

The 4B process culminates in BUILD.

Your 12-week individualized plan — delivered through Everfit — is built on top of the movement foundation established in BASE, BODY, and BRANCHES. Progressive loading. Continued mobility integration. Performance work that cooperates with your nervous system rather than fighting it.

This is not generic programming dropped into an app. It is individualized to your body, your goals, and what the previous three phases revealed about how you move.

Credentials

Who Is Trainer Mike?

Mike Fleming holds a Master of Science degree and carries credentials that span clinical practice and performance coaching: ATC (Athletic Trainer Certified), CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist), USAW (USA Weightlifting Coach), PES (Performance Enhancement Specialist), and NASE.

The ATC credential is worth explaining to people who haven't encountered it: Athletic Trainers are licensed healthcare professionals trained in injury prevention, assessment, and rehabilitation. It is a clinical distinction. Mike brings that clinical lens to every program he designs — which is why his approach looks different from what you get from a personal trainer or a standard online coach.

What separates Mike's practice from the clinical side is that he did not stay there. He has spent his career working with people where they actually live and train — and building a system around the pattern he kept seeing: the right exercises, in the wrong order, producing the wrong results.

I had the privilege of working with Trainer Mike starting my freshman year of high school, and from the very beginning he changed the way I understood training. He taught me that being an athlete wasn't just about being the fastest, the strongest, or the one with the most muscle. It was about learning how to care for my body, strengthen my foundation, and build habits that would keep me healthy for years. Because of him, I truly felt myself growing not just as an athlete, but as a person who understood and respected my own body. Over the years, I noticed I was getting injured less, and when something did happen, Trainer Mike was always there for me through a text, a phone call, or an in-person session. I loved working with the 1080 machine and being able to track real numbers, set goals, and hit personal bests. He held me accountable in a way that felt supportive, never judgmental. He pushed me to be better, but never compared me to anyone else. Every session, he gave me his full attention and made sure I never felt rushed or overlooked. Even after I left for college and suffered a hamstring injury, he was the first person I called. As soon as I came home for break, he made time for me, got me in the gym, and had me back on track quickly. Trainer Mike has always taken a genuine interest in me. Not just in my performance, but in who I am. He makes me feel important, valued, and cared for, and that's something I'll never forget!

I have been going to Fleming Athletics for the last 5 years. During this time, I have learned a lot physically and mentally. I have learned how my body works and how to fix it when things are wrong. We have had many talks about life that have helped me be who I am today on and off the field. Mike has helped me get stronger, more explosive, and stay healthy so that I am able to perform at the collegiate level. I would not be feeling as confident in my athletic abilities and lifts if it were not for Mikes' programs over the last 5 years.

Frequently asked questions

I'm not an athlete. Is the 4B process for me?

Yes. The system was built for physically active people — which includes anyone who wants to move well and stay out of pain, regardless of whether they compete. The same sequencing principles that help a competitive thrower also help a 50-year-old who wants to hike without hip pain, or a working professional who played college sports and now feels like a stranger in their own body. Mike works with both.

I've already done physical therapy. How is this different?

Physical therapy is designed to return you to baseline function after an injury. The 4B process is designed to go further: to correct compensation patterns, optimize movement quality, and build the strength and mobility foundation that keeps you out of pain long-term. The clinical framing is similar — Mike is an ATC — but the goal is different. Traditional rehab gets you back to zero. The 4B process is built to take you past it.

The method also differs structurally. Traditional rehab often addresses isolated muscle groups or movement deficiencies. The 4B system is explicitly sequenced — every phase builds on the previous one, and the order is not arbitrary. That is the mechanism most programs miss.

Can I do this if I'm currently dealing with pain or an injury?

The 4B process is specifically designed for people who are managing pain and want to change the underlying cause. That said: this is not medical treatment, and Trainer Mike is not a physician. If you have an active injury, a serious medical condition, or have been advised by your doctor to avoid exercise, please consult your healthcare provider before enrolling.

Is this online or in-person?

The course content is online, video-based, and self-paced through the Fleming Athletics platform. The BUILD phase is delivered through Everfit. Clients local to Spring Grove, PA can discuss in-person options directly with Mike: flemingathltcs@gmail.com or 717-800-8953.
